{Rumor Mill} Gremlins 3 Direct To Video??

Allrighty folks.

I have been putting off posting this, but the dozen or so emails compelled me to say something.

As many of us know, Ghostbusters 3 has been confirmed to be in some stage of development by Ray Stantz himself, Dan Aykroyd. This is one of the beloved series of the 80s, just like Gremlins. In fact, both franchises really play to a similar audience. Ghostbusters came out in 1984, as did Gremlins. Ghostbusters 2 came out in 1989, with Gremlins not far behind in 1990. Both being huge franchises of the 80s and early 90s, both with more merchandise than you can shake a wet gremlin3q.gifmogwai at, it makes sense that a company would eventually want to continue making money on these brands.

So soon after Ghostbusters 3 was re-semi-confirmed, the Gremlins 3 news started to leak out.

Gremlins 3 scuttlebutt is nothing new, it is no big secret that scripts have been out there, and there has been talk of various actors/actresses coming to the party, but never anything concrete. Joe Dante has repeatedly explained that Small Soldiers was “his gremlins 3”, and that Gremlins was a product of the effects at the time, and now they want him to do CGI, but he has no interest in that path.

Moviehole.net has had a couple of interesting notes on Warner Premiere, the new Direct to Video branch of Warner Brothers. One thing said is that there may be a Gremlins 3 in the works, though not involving (Gremlins 1&2) director Joe Dante or Producer Mike Finnell.

From this article on Moviehole.net

Talking to Empire Magazine, Producer Michael Finnell mentioned that “they [WB] might do a low-budget direct-to-DVD version”, but neither he nor director Joe Dante would donate their services to it.  According to Dante, “Gremlins was governed by the technology that produced it. Now it would be CGI, and you could do anything. There may be places for the jokes to go [The White House?]. But you’ve got a company who owns the rights to a movie that they don’t quite understand.  I think it’s going to be difficult for them to make another one”.

Also it mentions somewhat candidly, that (sic)”Zack Gallighan’s determined to make sure they do…” A few emails I recieved mentioned this, as  proof that Gremlins 3 is happening. I am going to go out on a limb and say that this is just an off-comment from the author of the news article.  First of all there is no reference, there is no source on Zach’s opinion on a new gremlins film, and the fact that they didn’t even spell his name right shows a lack of interest in ensuring accuracy.

I have sent out a few emails, and will be making a couple phone calls tommorow regarding this information, as I would like to confirm or debunk this rumor as soon as possible.

There will also be a Gremlins 3 section coming soon for news, rumors, and the saga so far.

I appreciate the emails, keep them coming, and if you have any more information regarding Gremlins 3 please keep it coming! Feel free to digg this or distribute it to people you know that might be able to shed a bit of light on the situation.

As soon as I know anything else, or get word from anyone that might be involved with the project you all will be the first to know.

Warner, I really mean it! I don’t want “Gremlins 3” direct-to-video I want it to be in movie theaters NOW!!!!

I hear you guys loud and clear! It’s great getting feedback from you all, and yes, Gremlins would not be the same with CGI, unless there was a damn good reason for it.

The world has changed dramatically since 1990, everyone has cell phones, the world is connected through the internet in ways that people only could imagine seventeen years ago.

Keep the comments coming and the more people that show interest, the more seriously WB will take the making of a third film!

If Warner Brothers actually possessed some intelligence, and understanding about these films and their cult following, they would try to get Joe Dante back, and would allow the use of puppets instead of CGI. This suggests to me that they are looking for any movie they can remake or add a sequel to… seems there is no such thing as a new idea some times doesn’t it… although I would love, love LOVE!!! To see a sequel, it will make me sad to see Gizmo in CGI, even if they used the best possible computer graphics and programmers, it just won’t be the same… but at this point, I really would see any Gremlins sequel, and I think that it would provide a boost to the merchandising again, which would mean more stuff to collect lol… I hope they don’t screw this up *fingers crossed*… I think there is a large market out there for a real gremlins movie, with puppets and a release on the big screen, I believe that Warner Brothers underestimate the popularity of these movies, and the appeal that they would have with a whole new generation.
I guess for now I will continue to impatiently wait for more news! lol

As much as I love the Gremlins-franchise I hope that Warner Bros. doesn’t screw up the whole intention of the films. We don’t want to get stuck with a Naked Gun Gremlins style movie, do we? Let’s hope that Warner Bros. make their minds up and ask Joe Dante to helm the project and of course let Spielberg produce it.

Well I agree that Gremlins deserves better than a Direct to video, but DVD gremlins is better than no gremlins at all.

Maybe it might be fully CGI and a reworking of Gizmo & The Gremlins animated series that never released. Then we get weekly gremlins, who knows, it could happen!

sure direct to dvd could be good but i hope they dont cuz gremlins deserves better, if it does happen it will be sooner than later, only downside to this is if it does ever happen and goes straight to dvd we will never see gremlins on big screen ever agian.
