Back To The Ride
Back To The Ride by Roy F.
I have been a fan of the Gremlins films for as long as I can remember.
As a kid my parents once took me to WB Movie World for the Summer and I remember being amazed at the fact they had a Gremlins themed ride.. I went back to the park quite a few times and still have fond memories of going there. Since then the park had lost it’s WB license in 2004.
Fast forward to 2010, the park by now changed it’s name to Movie Park Germany and most of it’s rides were removed/converted or simply left abandoned.
This Halloween I won some tickets for the park at a auction, I was actually excited to see what has changed. All of the big coaster riders were the same but with a new name slapped on, a Looney Tunes ride was converted into a Ice Age one.
I then noticed the building that was used for the Gremlins Invasion…it was empty. I was hit by a bad wave of nostalgia when I saw that the building was almost in a state of decay.
I went up to the ride’s exit gates where you would at one time be greeted by Alf and Gizmo on a old firetruck and the only thing remaining was that firetruck. I tried to get a picture of it but it was too dark for my camera to handle.
On the walls of the building where the old Gremlins Invasion sign would hang was a poster advertising a new ride (most likely a coaster) coming in 2011 with a tagline that said ” ‘Evil’ things come to those who wait!”
I took a closer look at that poster and notice there’s two gremlin-like eyes on it. Were they going to recycle the Gremlins for one of their rides now too?
When I arrived home I started searching on the internet for more info, as it turns out one of the Gremlin animatronics was given away for a contest on some dutch themepark-forum (which I still kick myself for missing out on.)
