Spoiler-Free Review: Prometheus (2012)

Prometheus Spoiler-Free Review:

You can try forgetting this isn’t really an Alien film, but it kinda is, but it isn’t. Ridley Scott keeps dropping hints that we are in the same Universe as Alien but wants us to forget about Alien. go figure. This is first 3d movie I have seen that blew me away with the quality of the presentation.  The 3D effect (seen in IMAX) was used to enhance the scenery rather than take focus. The massive alien structures seemed truly to extend deeper than the window of the movie screen, while CGI elements felt you could reach out and touch them. This is 3D done right.

Prometheus is definitely the best movie I have seen this year, including Avengers, Men In Black 3 and Hunger Games. This movie was more intense and horrifying than I expected, without being full of Cheap scares. It returns us to older cerebral sci-fi where the idea of what is occurring and the unknown factor is more terrifying than anything else. We don’t have all the pieces to the puzzle and that just makes things a bit creepier.

Prometheus is not without its flaws, but they are specific to characters and scenes, so it can be difficult to analyze without spoiling plot points. Suffice to say a few characters make typical slasher movie style decisions, when they are supposed to be scientists that takes you out of the film for a moment to say “uhhhh ok…that was REALLY dumb.”

The cast was a bit forgettable at points, but Noomi Rapace did a great job in her first major english-speaking main character role. Michael Fassbender steals his scenes as David, someone who’s agenda is never quite clear, which makes him by far the most fleshed-out character in the film. Idris Elba, who plays Janek, Prometheus’ pilot, is probably one of the most realistic “average working guy” characters in sci fi since Yaphet Koto and   Harry Dean Stanton brought Parker & Brett to life in 1979’s Alien. (there go those Alien comparisons again…)

Sci-Fi fans: See prometheus, leave your Alien expectations at the door and just enjoy the film. Bring some friends because you will want to discuss this one for a long while to come.

Everyone Else: Get ready for one unique ride that should be seen on the big screen to be appreciated.

Spoiler-Free Reviews Incoming!

Another feature that I am bringing into Gremlins Online is “Spoiler-Free Reviews”

This is something that has been tons of fun to do on social networking sites, and a few readers have suggested they would like to see brought to the larger audience of Gremlins Online.

Spoiler-Free reviews are sometimes in-depth looks at recent movies or TV shows, sometimes moments after airing, capturing the writer’s immediate impressions of what they just experienced. They aren’t always the perfect review, and can often be a bit surprising, but they are reviews for lovers of media to lovers of media that want some info but want to avoid spoilers.

So as they are uploaded, check them out and tell me what you think! If you have a Spoiler-Free review or want to start writing them regularly for Gremlins Online, let me know, I would be happy to take a look at some samples and see if you would be a good fit for the site.
